Auckland
racing driver Angus Fogg (LG / Newstalk ZB Falcon) has caused a sensation by
taking out the opening round of the BNT V8s Championship despite not winning
any of the three races at Pukekohe Park Raceway. Fogg’s 2nd, 4th and 5th places
gave him enough points to take the round overall. Queensland based Kiwi star Craig Baird
(United Video Falcon) was 2nd overall while BNT sponsored Aucklander Tim Edgell
(Chesters / BNT Falcon) was a consistent 3rd.
The sensation of the day came in the third race when the
winner of the first two races, Nelson’s John McIntyre (Blackwoods Paykels
Protector Safety Falcon) punctured a tyre after contact with another car.
Another race winner was Auckland’s
Andy Booth who took out the reverse grid feature race in his Rock FM Commodore
signaling the Holdens’ return to form.
The opening race for the championship started with immediate drama as Edgell jumped McIntyre off the rolling start to open an immediate lead before the first corner. Edgell admitted the start lights went out earlier than usual for this track so he was off without delay. However, on Lap 3 of the 12 lap race, McIntyre showed his absolute class with a brilliant overtaking maneuver around the outside of the leader coming into the last turn and open a small lead he was to control to the finish.3
Race 2, also over 12 laps, was another McIntyre benefit but
this time “Johnny Mac” got the start superbly and was never headed while behind
him, Edgell received close attention from a charging Baird. Fogg also made a
better start this time and forced his way past Manuell on Lap 2 while John
Hepburn (Commodore) and Mackenzie both suffered hair raising spins. The cars
finally crossed the finish line in the order of McIntyre, Baird, Edgell, Fogg,
Knight and an impressive Bargwanna.
The 22 lap full reverse grid Race 3 was a relatively orderly affair although the crowd were thrilled by the tactics of the top drivers threading their way up through the pack. Andy Booth led from start to finish from his front row grid position to show the true speed the Commodores are capable of while Angus Fogg was magnificent in taking 2nd from his 20th start position. Paul Manuell endorsed the Commodore comeback in finishing 3rd ahead of Andy Knight, Martin Short and a superb William Bamber. Craig Baird came home in 7th with Tim Edgell, Haydn Mackenzie and Andrew Anderson completing the top ten.
